Why do people choose to be mentally ill?

‘So and so had everything to live for, it doesn’t make any sense’-  as if anxiety, depression and the endless list of mental health issues are purely lifestyle choices.

I heard it on TV this morning. British boxer Tyson Fury is apparently suffering manic depression and a spokesperson for him, whoever it was, pretty much summed up the misconceptions around his condition. ‘He has everything to live for’… ‘He has a great life’…. ‘He’s flushing it all down the drain’…

We don’t say the same to cancer sufferers, we don’t walk up to blind people and tell them the world is too beautiful to be blind, why is mental illness considered a choice?
