  1. Check books with similar subjects for how long a preface or introduction should be. While I’m half-assedly working on a non-fiction book, its introduction is something I’m trying to limit to a page and a half tops. If you have an extended introduction, it needs to be a first chapter. As the names “introduction” and “preface” imply, you’re just setting up the work that follows.
